Who slipped a shot of espresso in Carol Weston’s cup of decaf?

The reliably docile Senate Republican Leader took a whack at State Treasurer Dave Lemoine for squandering 20 million tax dollars by investing in Mainsail II, a poorly rated subprime mortgage company.  Now that the reality has sunk in, that investing in a company that makes money off people with a history of unpaid bills was about as good an idea as communism (it looked good on paper), Sen. Weston seized an opportunity to hold a bureaucrat accountable. 

 According to the front page report in the Kennebec Journal, Lemoine is saying “We think we will be paid [back the lost $20 million] in full.”  I don’t know about you, but this is about as reassuring as George H. W. Bush saying “no new taxes” or when Bush Jr. announced “mission accomplished.”

Anyway, as you read in the article, Weston took the gloves off; put the brass knuckles on and called Lemoine’s actions hasty and reckless.  Clearly, the Democratic legislator turned Democratic bureaucrat, wasn’t prepared for such harsh words.  While the Treasurer compares his financial responsibilities to buying lotto tickets and quietly hopes to recoup the lost dollars, Weston might as well have had a megaphone in front of her as she blasted the poor management of Lemoine and his staff.
