Representatives from the group Fed Up With Taxes have turned in 90,000 signatures to the Secretary of State's office. That is about 35,000 more than needed, and should guarantee that the issue will be on the ballot this fall.
Newell Augur in a prepared statement noted, “
“With more than 90,000 signatures collected in less than 60 days, it’s clear that Mainers are angry about these taxes, upset about the way they were passed, and are ready to join us in voting YES on November 4th”, said Augur. “A majority of legislators thought they could slip this one by the voters in the middle of the night. Thanks to the success of the signature gathering effort, we now will have a chance to debate these taxes in the light of day. We are confident that Maine people will reject them soundly.”
Once the signatures have been certified by the Secretary of State, voters will have their say on November 4th.

Question
Any word from Newell on what those 90,000 signatures cost? His prepared statement makes it sound like they were collected by volunteers, but the truth is that they were collected by a professional firm which brought paid staffers into Maine to collect them. 90,000 is an achievement no matter how you get them, but this wasn't a grassroots effort, it was a bought-and-paid-for professional operation.
Wondering
I wondered what it cost the MSEA SEIU to come to my door to collect a signature to support the union. I'm sure that a good portion came from the taxes that I paid for union dues.
Poor kid got a boot in the rear.
Buh Bye

They tried grassroots...
They tried to do Grassroots methods of gettings the sigs. Originally it was going to be a Young Republican project, but they dropped the ball on it. So they just hired an out of state firm to do it.
Slight Correction...
Actually, that's not entirely true. The Young Republicans and other volunteers were supposed to supplement the paid signature gatherers, which they did. No one realistically thought that we'd ever gather that quantity of signatures in such a short period of time using only volunteer collectors (ala the Real ID veto effort).
Unfortunately, the way Maine's People's Veto timeline is set up, it's next to impossible to be successful without using paid signature gatherers.
Confused
Now correct me if I am wrong (which I very well may be) but if my reading of last years TABOR bill (which was hugely voted out) had been passed, couldn't we have avoided all this and the new sin tax would have had to go to a citizens vote in the first place, by "Voting NO on 1" that you saw on everybodies license plates. You essentially stated that you didn't want a voice in the approval of New or increased taxes, now a year later you're having to run around and gather thousands of votes so you CAN voice your opinion on taxes, I'm confused, what is it you really want.
Stop Comparing Fed Up With Taxes To TABOR
The problem with TABOR is that it performed neurosurgery with a shotgun.
