The pain in Maine falls mainly at the pump

The automatic gas tax went to 28.5 cents on July 1st. The gas tax in Maine is no longer voted on, but is an automatic tax increase, indexed to inflation. The automatic gas tax provision began with the enactment of LD 2020 -- effective July 1, 2003.

Maine is one of the few states that will see a gas tax increase this year. Governor Sonny Perdue in Georgia suspended their automatic increase a few weeks ago. The Georgia tax was slated to rise to 18.5 cents.

It probably would have been a good idea to take a break from the tax this year, and if Fred Nutter thinks the automatic gas tax is a bad idea, then that's good enough for me.

Remove the gas tax hike

This great state seems to do everything it can to shoot itself in the foot.

Sad times now. As it is, record high oil and gas prices are causing people to stop traveling. Food costs are going to a record high because of transportation costs. Next winter record high oil prices will kill many Mainers who just can't afford the cost of oil heat.

And now we have the state implementing the 'automatic' gas tax increase. This on top of the recent midnight beverage tax increase.

And the legislative lefties just want to keep on taxing us more and more. Their poor planning and tax-and-spend mentality may help themselves a lot, but it sure doesn't help the People of Maine.

So, my question is, when are our local and federal legislators going to do things that will actually help the People?

Gas tax usage

One more thought...

The gas tax is supposed to be used for repair and maintenance of the roads.

Can someone tell me where the gas tax money actually goes, because it sure ain't going into repair and maintenance of the Maine roads.

Anyone?
