And now - this week's lawbreaking - lawmaker

As Will Walcott begins his transition from former lawmaker to prisoner, it is only fitting that we cue up our next offender --- so, let's give a warm welcome to Representative Barstow (D-Gorham).

Rep. Barstow is the Recreation Director for the Town of Buxton and also the State Legislator from Gorham. From the story in the American Journal:

"According to the accountant, Rep. Chris Barstow was improperly using a town credit card, postage machine and cell phone for personal use.

Regarding the overall accounting improprieties and administrative mismanagement, Mr. Barstow is, "... regretful of mistakes that were made."

On the improper use of the credit card for gas Rep. Barstow notes, " In retrospect, it was a mistake, not illegal but a poor choice."

And for using the Town's postage meter for personal mail he explains, "It was a bad decision on my part."

So, we have mistakes, poor choices and bad decisions. He'll make a fine Legislator. In fact, that would look great on campaign materials.

Representative Barstow is unopposed in the June 10th primary for his Legislative seat.

Kudos to Gordon Lane and Robert Lowell from the American Journal, who got the scoop on this story. It is well worth the read.

Dumb.

I just don't understand this kind of thing. Robbing a bank is bad, but at least the payoff would be (possibly) worth the risk.

Filling your tank and sending out personal mail? Not so much.

Let this be a lesson

Let this be a lesson to anyone who intends to defraud the Clean Election system.

Jail time for misuse.

There have been others who have been fined heavily.

The Maine Clean Election Act WILL be enforced.
