Fed Up With Taxes: PAC report highlights

Fed Up With Taxes, a political action committee formed to support the People's Veto effort currently underway, has filed it's first PAC report.

According to the PAC report, they have raised $182,100 dollars. The Maine Beer and Wine Wholesalers are in big, with a $100,000 contribution. The Maine Beverage Association and the Maine Restaurant Association are in for $25,000 a piece. The Maine Auto Dealers Association kicked in 10 grand, which may be a sign that car of the future may be running on soda syrup. The Maine Soft Drink Association dropped 15K for the effort and the Maine Innkeepers threw in another $6,000 dollars. Coca Cola Bottling in Farmington donated a thousand bucks and Canteen Services tossed a hundred dollars into the kitty.

The "In-kind" donations are also fairly substantial, with close to 45 thousand dollars worth of services donated to the campaign effort. Of note, is a $25,000 donation by the American Beverage Association in Washington DC for a Poll. That must be the poll that told them people don't like taxes.

On the expense side, all the cash is essentially going to National Petition Management (NPM), the group selected to run the collection effort. They have received just under $100,000 thousand dollars to date. My understanding that the commitment is more on the order of 300 to 400 thousand, as future PAC reports will show.

On the their website it says "Fed Up With Taxes is a coalition of Maine citizens, businesses and organizations who are tired of paying high taxes." So far, the cash contributions are a little light from the "citizens" -- as in ZERO.

Libby was right

It is a corporate veto campaign! They didn't even through a couple of "individuals" on there as a fig leaf.

If Maine people were really behind this asinine effort en masse, they wouldn't need tens of thousands of dollars from the beverage lobbyists, and they wouldn't need to hire all their signature gatherers from out of state..

By the way, isn't it illegal for non-Maine residents to collect petition signatures?

It's ironic that while the federal government is trying to stimulate the economy, Maine's government is doing just the opposite by raising taxes even higher.

I would have supported this

I would have supported this effort had they used the opportunity to organize an effective campaign with Maine people to control taxes. Instead, they out-sourced the campaign. Just like they have done with our jobs.

point of order

Last I checked, it was Maine people who owned those Maine businesses that kicked in for this. Does the virtue of them owner a business negate their citizenship in Maine? Certainly beats the other side getting their money from some out of state hedge fund guru.

As I recall, the anti-TABOR money came largely from out of state as well. Why is it that people from away, who don't have to live with the taxes, are so willing to spend money here in Maine in support of higher taxes?

Chellie's Hedge fund honey

How's does Chellie Pingree's hedge fund honey, Sussman, have a dog in this fight? Same question for the state employees and the state teacher's union. Would this be more about state jobs than it is about health care?

Ridiculous

Hughes - are you claiming that "on the order of 300 to 400 thousand" is coming from Maine small businesses? That's a joke, right?

This campaign is paid for by lobbyists and big business, and it's being conducted by hired guns from California. So call it what you want, just not a "people's" veto. That's a crock.

nope

Link, PAC report says where the money comes from. Feel free to dig into other reports to show otherwise if you can.

If Maine businesses can't put forth the money, as you contend, then they certainly cannot take the hit to profits this tax would lead to.

By your own argument you show the insanity of these taxes. Thanks.

NO MORE TAXES!!!!! People

NO MORE TAXES!!!!! People in Maine should be spending thier money in Maine. It's a double edged sword when you give them even more reason to shop over the border in NH. We send our hard earned money out of the state and put small businesses out of business. If the legislature thought this was a good tax then why was it passed in the dead of night on the closing session? Mainers have had the wool pulled over thier eyes one time too many. I don't care what the tax pays for, I'll be lucky if I can pay to keep my house heated this winter. More taxes???? Thanks for thinking of the guy who goes to work every day. I will not vote for a single democrat ever again.

Just Curious

When, exactly, was the last time you actually voted for a Democrat "Maine Worker"?

It should be obvious why the

It should be obvious why the beverage industry is against this. Obvious as well, as to why the people are against it.

Why is Sussman, a Connecticut businessman against it? The answer is obvious.

Connecting Democrats to a big tax increase while other important items are going through the roof will not help Pellie Chingree in November.

Poor, pitiful, Pellie Chingree, getting beat on by big beverage all while Pellie schins the people up the wazoo

drink more soda

Drink all the soda you can right now before the price goes up!

Help fund the peoples veto!
