Dean Scontras, candidate for the First Congressional District picked up the endorsement of the National Right to Life Committee. In accepting the endorsement Mr. Scontras stated,
"I am proud of this endorsement," said Scontras. "I have said throughout this campaign that I am proudly pro-life, and I will not change my beliefs for political expediency. As President Reagan pointed out, it is impossible to diminish the importance of the unborn life without diminishing respect for all human life. I will boldly defend this, the most basic of our values, when I get to Washington."
Mr. Scontras was even able to work in the name of Ronald Reagan, which he is required to do by law in the Republican Party --- at least six times a day, every day.
It is still unclear if voters in the more liberal First District are litmus test voters on issues such as abortion. My best guess is that there are at least a few thousand folks spread throughout southern Maine who would be motivated to vote for Mr. Scontras as a result of this endorsement, which would be very significant in a primary that is not expected to draw large numbers.
If Mr. Scontras wins the primary, he will have to work hard to prevent the Right to Life endorsement from becoming the Right to Lose in the general election this fall.
