13 debates in 19 days: Republicans redefine torture

Charlie Summers, who is running for Congress in Maine's first District ---from Baghdad, is returning to Maine within the week. Apparently, he has decided to implement the latest torture techniques on Maine voters.  Mr. Summer and Mr. Scontras have agreed to do 13 debates throughout the first district over the next 20 days.  The schedule is as follows:

May 19 - York County Republican Committee Meeting, 6:30 p.m.

May 20 - Piper Shores, 3:30 p.m.

May 20 - Cumberland County Republican Committee Meeting, 6:30 p.m.

May 22 - Values Voter Forum, University of New England, 7:00 p.m.

May 23 - NAACP, University of New England, 6:00 p.m.

May 27 - Channel 13, 5:00 p.m.

May 29 - Portland Regional Chamber, 7:00 a.m.

June 2 - Bridgton Lakes Region, 6:30 p.m.

June 3 - Brunswick Town Meeting, 6:00 p.m.

June 5 - WGAN Radio, 8:00 a.m.

June 5 - Main Public Broadcasting Network, 8:00 p.m.

June 6 - Channel 6, 7:00 p.m. (air date)

June 7 - South Berwick Town Committee, 9:00 a.m.

Mr. Summers will undoubtedly long for the 110 degree heat of Baghdad at the end of this tour of duty.

Just Switched....

After a pretty long process involving some soul-searching, I made my decision to switch candidates in this primary to Scontras. I've known Summers and his wife for some time, and have supported them in the past but mostly because Summers was the uncontested nominee and there was no alternative for me.

I'm a conservative and Scontras is the only conservative in the race. As much as I have tried to convince myself otherwise, Summers is a very liberal Republican who holds a number of views on both fiscal and social issues that are just against my core values.

I'll be pulling for Scontras in these debates.

I switched too!

On paper, I’m much closer to Scontras politically than Summers. I had planned to vote for Dean until I heard him speak to a group of Republicans following a radio debate with Ethan Strimling. Scontras claimed that he kicked Strimling’s tail in the debate. Not so!

The big issue of the debate was immigration policy. Strimling, who couldn’t be any further away from me ideologically, made a strong emotional connection with the audience with some hypothetical BS about a woman with two grandsons serving in Iraq being tossed out of the country because she’s an illegal alien. Meanwhile Scontras droned on with facts, figures, and his status as a 3rd generation Greek-American.

If Scontras thinks he beat Strimling in the debate, he’s either delusional, arrogant, or both. Strimling knocked him around the block and back again. Scontras may have had the accurate facts and been right on the issues but he had absolutely no emotional appeal.

Also, Ray Richardson’s endorsement of Scontras is a problem for me. Richardson is a blowhard who causes more damage to conservatives than good because it’s all about him, not the cause. I witnessed the mic fiasco at the GOP convention last week. Had Richardson not taken so long to waddle up to the mic and had he not done his booming, longwinded introduction, Scontras might have had time to finish his speech.

If Scontras gets the nomination, Republicans will not win this seat back. Republicans have a much better chance with Summers as the nominee.

Re: WindhamMan

Yeah, the Christian Civic League is a great reference... of how NOT TO VOTE.

Thanks, WindhamMan, that's very helpful.
