Late last week, rumors swirled as legislators, tax activists, lobbyists and industry representatives rattled their sabers over the possibility of a People’s Veto of the new tax on health care premiums, beer and soda to pay for the state’s Dirigo Health program. In case you are interested in all the little details of the bill you can view the Legislation here By the way, the bill title is hilarious– An Act to Continue Maine’s Leadership in Covering the Uninsured.
Back to the battle at hand.
From what little intelligence I can gather – “they had a meeting -- they exchanged emails -- they agreed to meet again.”
Whoa -- Talk about a revolution! Sign me up.
For the record, an application for a people's veto referendum petition must be filed with the Secretary of State within 10 business days after adjournment of the legislative session at which the Act in question was passed.
If the signature collectors are successful in obtaining the necessary signatures (55,000 signatures in 90 days from adjournment - April 17th) - then Maine people will get a reprieve from the new tax until the vote in November.
What can you possible add to the LaMarche departure from the Oxford County casino campaign?

Poor Anheuser Busch!
"Oh no! People will stop buying beer if you raise the price by three cents!"
That's just idiotic.

Walt
Walt must think that the tax only applies to Bush and Miller like the LSJ erroneously reported - and corrected - in an op-ed.
Whether you agree with the goal of funding Dirigo through these kinds of taxes this particular law is garbage. None of the lawyers up there under the dome could have read it and if they did they need some refresher courses in constitutional law.
Not just Bud.
I understand it doesn't just apply to the big boys. But it's the big boys (companies that make HUGE profits in this state) that are attempting to bankroll this people's veto.
Also, how is this unconstitutional?
I love beer, and I buy a lot of it (mainly Maine brews) and I'm all for this new law.
The lobbyists who are freaking out about this should just have a beer or two and chill out.
Peoples' Veto
If anyone organizing a drive give me a petition to sign and I'll sign it. Just tell me where and when they're available.
I may even be able to grab signatures.
