4 Questions from Secretary Chertoff

Secretary Chertoff has given Maine two more days – just two more days before we……. well , before we…huh, I’m not sure what he is going to do us, but anyway he is really serious this time.

How do I know?

He sent a letter!

It would be easy to dismiss this as bureaucratic bungling on behalf on an administration that can’t shoot straight.  But the questions in the letter are fair questions, and should be answered – not only by the Governor, but each and every one of the candidates for Congress.

After all, they are the folks that will be enforcing this policy.

The Department of Homeland Security is asking the State to commit to working on four areas of improvement related to the issuance of drivers’ licenses.

  1. Differentiate between licenses issued to illegal aliens and those issued to legal Maine residents or cease issuing drivers licenses to illegal aliens altogether;
  2. Check an applicant’s legal status with the Department of Homeland Security;
  3. Ensure that driver's licenses issued to a non-citizens here legally expire at the same time that the individual’s visa expires; and
  4. Take a photograph of all applicants at the beginning of the process for obtaining a drivers’ license.

Those are terms as laid out by the Department of Homeland Security.

Do our elected officials and candidates agree with those terms or not?

PolitickerME will keep you posted on the answers that we receive.
