Susan Collins not the top pick for homeland security secretary

Multiple news agencies are reporting that Gov. Janet Napolitano (R-Ariz.) will be the next homeland security secretary

Read about Janet Napolitano on PolitickerAZ.com.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Bangor) was on the shortlist for the job. Napolitano’s appointment means she was not offered the job, or she did not accept it.

She previously told PolitickerME.com that she was not interested in the job. She just won re-election by a large margin over outgoing U.S. Rep. Tom Allen (D-Portland).

Politico: Snowe, Collins under consideration for Obama cabinet positions

U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, both Republicans, are being considered for cabinet positions by Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama, the Politico reports.

Collins is one of five people on the list for Homeland Security Secretary.

Snowe is one of three people mentioned for Commerce Secretary, along with Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Chicago business executive Penny Pritzker.

Snowe has told PolitickerME.com on several occasions that she is happy in the job she has now, and is not interested in a cabinet position.

Politicker.com’s James Pindell suggested Thursday that it would be a wise move for Obama to put Snowe in his cabinet. At that point, it would be up to Gov. John Baldacci to appoint a replacement until the next election. He would most likely appoint a fellow Democrat, increasing the Democrats’ ranks in the Senate.
