Maine's first responders announce their support for Susan Collins for U.S. Senate

PORTLAND, Maine-- In an historic show of support, the Professional Firefighters of Maine, members of the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF), and the Maine Fire Chiefs Association, the Maine Troopers Association, and the Maine Ambulance Association, will join U.S. Senator Susan Collins as her "First Responder Bus Tour" rolls through Southern Maine on Friday, September 5.

PORTLAND, Maine-- A group affiliated with MoveOn.Org and funded in part by partisan billionaire George Soros has launched another attack ad against Senator Susan Collins. The new ad, run by MoveOn.org affiliate VoteVets.Org, attempts to distort Senator Collins' record. This is the latest in a series of ads, which are paid for by out-of-state, special interest political groups, to attack Senator Collins since 2007. These same groups have already spent more than $1 million on attack ads against Senator Collins. Tom Allen recently said that such ads do not belong in Maine, but he has yet to denounce any of the negative attack ads that have run, and are currently running, against Senator Collins.

At a recent community dinner in Saco, there was one thing primarily on the minds of residents who came out to speak with U.S. Senate candidate Tom Allen (D-Portland): Energy, and what to do about the high oil costs.

Allen, who represents Maine’s 1st Congressional District, is challenging U.S. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Bangor) for her seat. During the August congressional recess, he is touring the state touting the components to his energy plan.

In the short term, Allen has proposed a home heating oil tax credit of up to $2,000 for families to help them through the winter. He also has suggested providing low-interest loans to give to people toward weatherizing their homes.

This morning, WGAN radio reported that at a news conference yesterday, "Congressman Tom Allen says (Susan) Collins should lobby President Bush for a special session."  Congressman Allen's statement came after reporters questioned why he cast the deciding vote in the House to adjourn for an August recess, instead of staying in session to deal with the high cost of oil and gas.  The final vote was 213-212...

Late Thursday evening, the U.S. Senate voted 48-40 in favor of a motion to adjourn so lawmakers could leave Washington for a month-long August recess. U.S. Senator Susan Collins was among those who voted to remain at work in order to address high gas and oil prices...

This lack of action is disappointing and not what Mainers expect or deserve when they are facing skyrocketing costs to fuel their cars and heat their homes this winter.  

OK—I am not a conspiracy theorist or a person who thinks the media is in the tank for one party or the other. But channel 6 and channel 8 should be publicly flogged for running Tom Allen’s campaign piece on his so-called “first time home buyers bill.”
