Getting beyond money and pom-poms: How Saco is reaching 'real' voters

I attended my first political "house party" in 1994 when I was a senior in college. It was hosted by one of former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell's brothers for would-be Democratic gubernatorial candidate Joe Brennan (Brennan eventually lost the general election to Independent Angus King).  I was invited because I was a member of the Colby Democrats and the Brennan campaign was trying to recruit volunteers in the Waterville area.

I was interested in going because, up until that point, the closest contact I'd had to a political house party was eating lunch every Sunday at my uncle's house in Sanford; he was a local Selectman, hardly a mover and shaker in the political world, to say the least.

Video: Joe Brennan at the DNC

DENVER -- Former Gov. Joe Brennan attended the Democratic National Convention as a guest of the Maine delegation this week.

On the breakfast of the final day of the convention, he spoke to Maine delegates about his experience there.

 “The statement of the nomination of Barack Obama is not just to this nation, but to the world. It’s how America has grown up. And Joe Biden is ready to do a hell of a job,” Brennan said.

Former Gov. Brennan on Obama, Allen

DENVER -- Former Gov. Joe Brennan is a guest of the Maine Delegation at the Democratic National Convention this week with his wife, Connie. He said this is his eighth convention, many of which that he has spoken and/or been a delegate too.

“This is one of the most critical, because our standing in the world is so low,” Brennan said.

Brennan said it will be a great statement for democracy to elect a black president. He likened Obama to Jimmy Carter.
