SNOWE STATEMENT ON DELAY
OF REAL ID REQUIREMENTS
WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Senator Olympia J. Snowe (R-ME) released the following statement today regarding the Department of Homeland Security’s announcement that it is delaying implementation of the REAL ID Act, which would have required states to begin issuing tamper-proof identification cards by May:
“The Administration has made the right decision to delay the implementation of the REAL ID Act. In its present form, REAL ID represents a significant unfunded mandate on states like Maine and it is unrealistic to expect our state to conform to a program for which the federal government has only provided a mere three percent of the funds needed for implementation.”
