Political views in Washington County: A 4-story series

Washington County residents are a proud type. They enjoy the quiet beauty of where they live, and want to work hard to preserve the quality of life in their respective towns.

As anyone well-versed in Maine news knows, the county has fallen onto some hard economic times lately.

U.S. Reps. Mike Michaud and Tom Allen spent the past two days touring the county and meeting with residents. Throughout the tour, Allen talked about his Senate campaign. As PolitickerME followed them through the first portion of their tour, two themes kept recurring:

1) Washington County residents like where they live, and don’t want to leave.

2) They wish politicians would see their county more the way they do, as a good place to preserve jobs and promote tourism; and less the way it tends to be perceived, as a massive wasteland standing in the way between Canada and the rest of Maine.

In this series, we talk politics inside a clothing factory that is the county’s second-largest employer, with laid-off mill workers and tribal leaders. We also visit briefly with a company that has recently decided to come to Calais.

Politics is always starting

Politics is always starting so soon. Looks like Steve Rowe is already gearing up for a run at the Blaine House...just days ago started up a "Facebook group" with a contact e-mail "rowe2010@gmail.com" and also looks like he's registered www.rowe2010.com...

Too bad we keep having politicians treating each taxpayer-funded job as a stepping stone for their next job higher up the ladder.

in defense of elected officials who do their jobs

I find your “Taxpayer for Elected Officials Who Do Their Jobs” name ironic given the fact that you are critiquing Rowe, an elected official who takes doing his job of serving the people of Maine with the utmost seriousness. I think it is great that he and many other members of state government are using facebook as a way to get connect with young people in an effort to get them interested in politics. I have been to his facebook page and I did not see the gmail account that you mentioned but saw his personal e-mail as a contact e-mail. After reading your comment I visited www.rowe2010.com as well and there is nothing on that website saying he registered it. I do not think Rowe treats his position as Attorney General as you say a “stepping stone for (his) next job higher up the ladder” at all. Quite to the contrary, with term limits in effect I think that it is great that people like Rowe want to continue to serve the state of Maine by remaining in state government. Personally I think we need more people like him and less people like you.
