Pingree picks up a set of endorsements

Democrat Chellie Pingree, the former State Senate Majority Leader and Common Cause president who is running for the First Congressional District seat, is announcing a set of endorsements of thirty-five current and former lawmakers.

“I am honored by the level of support I have found all across Maine’s First Congressional District. I hope that this initial list of supporters encourages others to join the campaign – this is a wonderful beginning, and I look forward to meeting more voters in 2008 and asking each and every one of them to support my candidacy,” said Pingree.

The endorsers include Senate Majority Leader Libby Mitchell of Vassalboro, former House Speaker Michael Saxl of Manchester, Representative Anne Rand of Portland, Congresswomen Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, and Congressman Rush Holt of New Jersey.

Why

Give me 3 good reasons why I should support her for Congress.

Insiders

Wow. She has all the established political insiders on her side, all the people that are doing such a great job in Augusta and want to send her to DC to do to the rest of the nation what they're doing to Maine - budget deficits, bad state investments, school consolidation mess, Dirigo health, on and on. That's some endorsement.

3 Good Reasons

1) She's got the best record as a legislator by far and away. No one else in either primary has passed as much meaningful legislation for Maine (like MaineRX, to name just one law). She knows how to get the job done.

2) She has by far the most experience in DC. As the national president of Common Cause, she worked with members of both parties at the state and federal level on vital issues like fighting corruption in government and ensuring that every vote gets counted. She won't be in over her head, like some others would.

3) She is intelligent, principled and courageous. Agree or disagree with her, you can always count on her to tell you exactly where she stands. She doesn't hold lots of meaningless press conferences to get her name in the paper, or spend more time worrying about LOOKING like a progressive than actually passing good bills, she just rolls up her sleeves and gets to work.

That's three, but I could keep going...

Will she...

Brian, do you think she will do more and present more legislation than Rep. Allen did in Congress? Is she the type of person that take voting seriously and representing her Great State of Maine? I hope so.

Tha is the question, do you think she will do a better job than Rep. Allen?

Pingree's D.C. experience

If her D.C. experience is one of her top 3 strengths, I am not sure if that is is what we want in our next representative? Someone who is part of the establishment, part of the 'way things work in DC' or do we want someone to shake things up and get Maine related issues upfront and center. With all due respect to Rep. Allen, he has had years of 'experience in DC' (12 if I am not mistaken) and what the heck has he done for maine people?

Or, do we want someone who has been here in Maine, working for maine people and intends to do the same in Congress?

three good reasons?

How about ONE big one: she's the best candidate, bar none, I've seen in a long time. Plenty of progressive chops (just check out Common Cause, for starters), unsurpassed knowledge of state politics (she was senate majority leader), the respect of her peers, the support of labor, solidarity with small business owners, and a fresh set of national connections. Good grief. I would be hard pressed to ask for more in a candidate.
