The Move-on.org Primary

It’s getting to the point where we now have more democrats employed in the campaign sector than we do the private sector.

The Congressional race in Maine’s first district is the race to watch in 2008 for the State of Maine. And right now, the Democratic Primary is where it’s all happening.

Just to cover their bets, it would appear move-on .org has four candidates vying for the liberal wing of the party and one candidate is running for the Republican wing of the Democratic Party. At this point, no one has indicated an interest in running for the Democratic wing.

(Where is Senator Peter Mills when you need him?)

Back to the races:

Chellie PingreeChellie PingreeChellie Pingree. (http://chelliepingree.com/) Pingree remains the darling of the left. She is smart. She can raise money. And, she has some name ID left over from her run against Susan Collins back in 2002. The problem with the former head of Common Cause is that beyond the riders on the ferry to North Haven and the folks that order wine by the case – her name ID may not be enough to carry her without a well executed campaign plan, and not like the one she ran in 2002. Still, she belongs at the top of the heap at this early stage of the race.

Ethan StrimlingEthan StrimlingEthan Strimling. (http://ethan08.com/) We are going to put Strimling in at the number 2 slot. He has a great campaign team, ambition the size of Texas and looks the part. Of course, Striimling has been selling his brand of populism mixed with uber-liberalism to the folks on the Portland Peninsula. It’s unclear if that message resonates on the other side of 295, where there are children, working people, gun owners and home owners. Still, he should not be misunderestimated.

Mark Lawrence. (http://www.marklawrence.org/)Mark LawrenceMark Lawrence This former Senate President and current District Attorney in York County was the sacrificial lamb back in 2000 against Olympia Snowe. He garnered 23 votes to Olympia’s one million -- a close race by Snowe Standards. Lawrence would definitely win the nice guy award, but this is the primary and nice is out. Lawrence's main problem will be in deciding which end of the pool to swim in. He can head to the shallow end, where most of the primary voters are, and talk about impeaching the president and the rest of the Move-on talking points, or he can take his experience as a prosecutor and Senate President and wade out in to the deep end. The water is a lot warmer on the shallow side. The smart money is on Lawrence getting caught up in the left wing tide and choosing to swim in the shallow end -- too bad, because he can't win there and he could be a fine candidate in the deep end.

Mike BrennanMike BrennanMike Brennan. (http://brennanforcongress.com/) Brennan is a former State Senator and a social worker, which frankly, is pretty much the job description for a US House member. Unfortunately for Brennan, he is sharing the stage with folks who share his values, are better looking and have more money. He deserves credit for some decent early fundraising numbers, which certainly makes him a credible candidate. It remains unclear at this time how he manages to out-liberal his other friends in the race, which dooms him to second-tier status. Regardless, the four tem state senator will not be able to rely on the inability of the post office to deliver absentee ballot returns to jump start his political career in Congress.

Adam CoteAdam CoteAdam Cote. (http://www.adamcote.com) Adam Cote is an attorney, has a ton of young kids and is a former Iraq war veteran. Cote came out of the gate pretty strong in fundraising, topping 100K in the first report. Heck, he’s even got the franco name. What a candidate! Memo to Cote: Either you are in the wrong party or your liberal credentials are a little too well hidden for the move-on.org primary. Unless this guy can scour the streets of Sanford and Biddeford for franco voters or other Catholics, I’m not sure why he is running in a Democratic Primary. Adam, quit now and run as an Independent. You might win.

Next up: The Republican field.
