"Congressman Tom Allen says Collins should lobby President Bush for a special session..." WGAN radio, 8/5/08

PORTLAND, Maine -- This morning, WGAN radio reported that at a news conference yesterday, "Congressman Tom Allen says (Susan) Collins should lobby President Bush for a special session."  Congressman Allen's statement came after reporters questioned why he cast the deciding vote in the House to adjourn for an August recess, instead of staying in session to deal with the high cost of oil and gas.  The final vote was 213-212.

"This is the height of hypocrisy," said Mark Ellis, Chairman of the Maine Republican Party.  "First of all, if Congressman Allen were truly concerned about the high cost of energy, he would not have voted to take a vacation.  Instead, he would have voted to stay in session and work on finding solutions.  Second, if Congressman Allen really wanted to work on this issue, shouldn't he lobby the Democratic leaders of Congress, like Nancy Pelosi, for a special session?  The bottom line is Congressman Allen, a member of the House Energy Committee, voted to wait until at least September to begin addressing this crisis.  Senator Susan Collins voted to stay in Washington and work.  Tom Allen should know that Mainers cannot afford to wait."

Yesterday, Maine's Democratic Governor John Baldacci and Senate Majority Leader Elizabeth Mitchell (D-Vassalboro) criticized Congress for not dealing with the energy crisis.  The crisis is so severe that the Governor says he is considering calling a special session of the legislature to address energy issues.  Governor Baldacci is quoted in yesterday's Bangor Daily News saying, "I think we are going to have to act here because of the failure to act in Washington."
