Mary Andrews Earns Support of Maine’s Public Safety Professionals

YORK - Former State Senator Mary Andrews, of York, has been endorsed by the Professional Fire Fighters of Maine (PFFM) and the Maine State Troopers Association (MSTA) in her campaign to take back the seat now held by freshman Senator Peter Bowman.

Andrews previously served three terms in the Maine House of Representatives and one term in the Senate before retiring from office.  She has launched her campaign to reclaim her old seat earlier this year.

In a letter sent to members, PFFM President John Martel explained: "We must support those who support us, regardless of party affiliation."  He added: "Our endorsements are based on the candidates' records on our issues because we need fire fighter-friendly leaders in office."

As a nurse and former president of the York Volunteer Ambulance, Andrews put her experience to work training fire fighters on life-saving emergency procedures.  During her time as York Selectman and member of the Legislature, Andrews consistently supported proposals to strengthen Maine's corps of fire fighters.

In a statement endorsing Andrews on behalf of MSTA members, Executive Director Craig Poulin wrote: "During Mary's previous tenure in both the Maine House and Senate, she proved herself a strong advocate for Maine's law enforcement and first responder community.  She knows far better than most the dangers and challenges facing them and their families every day..."

Poulin noted Andrews' work to pass an immediate $50,000 death benefit for families of first responder killed in the line of duty, legislation that was inspired by her husband Charles Black, a State Trooper who was shot and killed by a bank robber in 1964.

"I'm honored to earn endorsements from Maine's fire fighters and state troopers," Andrews said.  "It is vital that elected officials support and recognize these public safety professionals, and their role in strengthening our communities and creating an environment where citizens and businesses feel safe and secure.  In the Senate, I will continue my support of these important individuals, and I look forward to working for responsible policies that will help them do their jobs quickly, safely and successfully."

Andrews is running to represent District 1 in the Maine Senate, which includes the towns of Eliot, Kittery, Ogunquit, South Berwick and York.  To volunteer with the Andrews for State Senate campaign, call 363-4714 or e-mail mandr30420@aol.com.
