A spokesman for U.S. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Bangor) said the campaign is hopeful that John McCain’s ramped up efforts will bring more voters to the polls.
Collins is running for reelection against U.S. Rep. Tom Allen (D-Portland.)
“Sen. McCain, like Sen. Collins, has built a solid reputation as someone who is willing to cross party lines, to set aside partisan politics, and to work to get the job done,” spokesman Kevin Kelley wrote in an e-mail. “Maine people like that.”

Collins must hate that McCain is coming in
Collins must really be angry that McCain is coming into Maine. The closer she is tied to him the worse for her, especially in southern Maine. This is a good thing for Democrats in Maine and the Allen Campaign.
Nothing Can Help Allen
He is a failure and Democrats running for the Legislature are avoiding him because they don't want the stink of death from his campaign to stick to them.
EFCA
Nice to see the lying anti-union banner ad at the top of MEPoliticker. For those that don't know, the EFCA does not eliminate the secret-ballot.
McCain will do Collins no favor
Real Mainer has it exactly right. Susan Collins has a reputation here as a moderate. Tom Allen's efforts to link her with Bush are not working. Should McCain extend his very negative, distortion laden campaign to the State of Maine, it runs the risk of linking Collins to McCain/Palin/Bush. That may be Tom Allen's only chance for victory.
Allen - Running for Congress? You kid me.
Has anyone even seen Tom Allen out on the stump this summer? He was a no-show at the Fryeburg Fair, even if ALL the Republican candidates managed to show.
The question now isn't how badly Allen will lose, its whether he will lose badly enough to sink whatever chances he ever had at running for Governor next year...
Allen unfit
I just saw the latest DSCC attack ad against Susan Collins. It's really a vicious ad, full of the same, hackneyed charges that Allen has made all summer that haven't resonated with a soul. The ad is ominous -- black and white, lurid music, snarky announcer.
Immediately after it ends, on comes an Allen ad beginning with Tom Allen saying, "There's nothing personal about this race between Susan Collins and me."
Give me a break!!! Allen is unfit to serve as a United States Senator.
He's been a lackluster member of the House, largely perceived as a nice, but ineffective guy. Now, his true colors are coming out. He's a party hack who will say whatever is necessary to win.
He knows now, running on his own record isn't enough -- so now he's slinging mud and dirtying up the whole race.
There's nothing nice about him.
