EqualityMaine has endorsed both Democratic candidates in Maine’s U.S. House races.
The group advocates for Maine’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.
Executive director Betsy Smith said of U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud (D-East Millinocket), who is running for reelection against John Frary (R-Farmington):
“Congressman Michaud has been a powerful voice for equality and for this state since he took office in 2003. His deep-rooted sense of fairness has made him a great ally for Maine’s LGBT citizens. He has worked with us on important issues for many years, and I know he will continue to do so.”
Smith said of Chellie Pingree (D-North Haven) who is running for the 1st Congressional District against Charlie Summers (R-Scarborough):
“Chellie Pingree has fought for equality since the very beginning of her career in the Maine legislature. In 1997 she was one of a handful of legislators to speak out against the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act. She consistently backed non-discrimination legislation in Maine, long before it was politically popular to do so. She has also expressed her support for marriage equality for same-sex couples.”
