Another State House reporter moves on

State House reporter Victoria Wallack is leaving to become the director of communications at the Maine School Management Association, Downeast Magazine’s media critic Al Diamon noted in his column today.

Wallack is a freelance writer, running Statehouse News Service, a one-person bureau covering the State House for several weeklies, Village Soup publications and the Brunswick Times-Record.

Ellsworth American Publisher Alan Baker, who urged Wallack to begin Statehouse News Service in the first place, does plan to replace her.

The State House press corps has thinned dramatically in recent years. Recently the Portland Press Herald stopped staffing its bureau, relying instead on Kennebec Journal reporter Susan Cover. The Bangor Daily News stopped staffing its State House office before the 2007 session began. The Lewiston Sun Journal still staffs its office during session, but the office that once held three is down to one. Television stations are all without a full time reporter at the capital.

The State House reporters with the most years under their belt are AJ Higgins, once of the BDN but now with Maine Public Broadcasting Network, and Mal Leary of Capitol News Service.

One of the few objective

One of the few objective reporters left in Maine - she will be sorely missed, and impossible to replace.
