GOP: King endorsement no surprise

Maine Republican Party chairman Mark Ellis issued the following statement in response to former independent Gov. Angus King’s endorsement of Barack Obama this morning:

“Angus King’s endorsement of Barack Obama is no surprise. We fully expected Gov. King to endorse whomever the Democrats nominated for President.  Indeed, Gov. King presided over a massive expansion of our state budget that has idled the Maine economy for over a decade.  Therefore, it is only fitting that King would endorse Obama who has promised higher income taxes, Social Security taxes, investment taxes, and corporate taxes, as well as ‘massive new domestic spending’.  After all, birds of a feather flock together.”

Birds of a feather indeed

I would challenge Mark Ellis to show when Obama "promised higher income taxes" to any but a very small slice at the very top of the income scale. Is Ellis actually that stupid, or is he utterly incompetent or is he purposefully lying?

Maine has over 40,000 small businesses that are family owned/closely held and that provide bulk of employment in our wonderful state. Many of these small businesses are what you consider the “very top of the income scale” and taking another “very small slice” from them will be an additional impediment to business expansion and job, salary, and benefit growth here in Maine.

While you toss around words like “stupid,” “incompetent,” and “lying,” we only need to look at your assessment the issue to understand why Maine remains a poor state with a stagnant economy.

I challenge you to find

many small business owners in Maine that make more than $3 million/yr, where Obama plans to allow Bush's tax cuts to expire. No one between $200k-600 will see any change in their taxes under the Obama tax plan. Remember, most small business owners in Maine are a one-man (or woman) shop.

Also, small business is something Obama protects with health care credits and zero capital gains.

Provide Zero Capital Gains and Other Tax Relief for Small Businesses and Start Ups: Barack Obama
believes that we need to reduce burdens on small business owners, many of whom are struggling to succeed as
health care and energy costs continue to skyrocket. Barack Obama will also eliminate all capital gains taxes on
small and start-up businesses to encourage innovation and job creation. Obama will support small business
owners by providing a $500 “Making Work Pay” tax credit to almost every worker in America. Self-employed
small business owners pay both the employee and the employer side of the payroll tax, and this measure will
reduce the burdens of this double taxation

Get your facts straight

I so enjoy it when someone begins a sentence with “remember.” It usually means that they’re about to leave out or forget a critical piece of information.

Anonymous1, you must have missed the memo from your candidate when he said, “It is time for folks like me who make more than $250,000 to pay our fair share.”

Not only will Obama roll back the income tax cuts currently in place for those earning more than $250,000, he’ll also require them to pay payroll taxes for their income up to $102,000 and on wages over $250,000.

Far more Maine small businesses fall in this category of wage earners than those who make 3 million+, especially those who “are a one-man (or woman) shop.”

In keeping with 30 years of Democratic control in Maine, Obama will provide more disincentives to those who fuel our economy with business investments and job growth.
