MINNEAPOLIS -- Maine's Republican delegation got a surprise visit from former White House political operative Karl Rove at its convention breakfast this morning.
During his speech, he talked up John McCain's Republican presidential bid and criticized Democratic nominee Barack Obama for his inexperience.
When the topic of running mates came up, he referred to U.S. Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) as a "big, blowhard doofus."
Later, a questioner asked about the economy in the context that the Democrats paint the country as being in a great depression. Before Rove answered, he asked: "Is there press in the room?"
Rove said that the housing values are dropping because they were artificially inflated during the housing boom. The economy is growing, he said, with a pattern of job creation.
The current problems came up because of risky behavior by private industry under an implied promise that the government would bail them out.
"It was brought on by risky behavior where government made a promise to private individuals who went out and made themselves very, very rich by risky practices that have put our economy at risk."
Rove played up McCain's candidacy in his speech, telling the story about him being a prisoner of war in Vietnam. McCain was told to go early because he was the son of an admiral, but he chose to stay because there were others in line in front of him to get out.
He also told a story of Cindy McCain adopting a child with health problems from Mother Teresa's orphanage.
He said Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) was a risky choice for vice president for the Republicans, but she will help McCain in certain geographic areas.
He touched on Obama's inexperience, and said his speeches are a result of targeted polling and focus groups.
"Barack Obama has spent four years in the Senate, and he spent two of those running for president," Rove said.
The McCain campaign will work hard in Maine and expend resources in the state, he said. Rove acknowledged that the Republicans do have trouble in the Northeast.
He said that the problems were slow in coming and will take time to solve. The first step is re-electing U.S. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Bangor).
"It strikes me that having an outdoors woman who is willing to take on the good ol' boys is something that might be well received in the Northeast," Rove said.
He said they campaigned hard in 2000 and 2004 in the Northeast and will continue to do so this year.
"I want to go out and fight for things in places that Republicans don't always win," Rove said.

I'd rather be a 'big
I'd rather be a 'big blowhard doofus' than a bible-bashing, moose-eating, global warming denying, abortion-militant gun-nut baby-factory from alaska. thats how she's being seen here in the rest of the world.
bye bye sarah. bye bye johnny mac. bye bye turd blossom!
ha
well said, Matt Hardeman. well said.
America is in such bad shape
America is in such bad shape partly because too many people gave a damn about what Karl Rove had to say.
Is he talking about George Bush?
No, Karl. Sorry to inform you, but the "big, blowhard doofus" is actually George Bush with John McCain strongly campaigning for the role!
WRONG
Wages are actually up. Sorry if stupid people bought houses that they couldn't afford. Sucks to be stupid.
left wing nutcases
LOL at all you left wing loonies who have done nothing but show your true colors. My, you get al worked up about Palin and her famiy and her beleifs.
matt hardlyamans brilliance
wow, almost everything thats wrong with liberals wrapped up in one moronic paragraph. I know you're proud of yourself and you have the approval of the other dipsticks who have given you kudos. keep up the good and intelligent fight you're waging. it will make it that much easier for a mccain/palin victory.
everybody pay attention to matt, hes very smart!!!
I'd rather have a...
Woman that has executive experience as a Governor, and has actual accomplishments under her belt. Skinning a moose is extra. A real independent woman.
What does either Obama, or Monica Lewinsky's ex-boyfreind's girlfriend have that Sarah Palin does not?
hey matt - we dont care
hey matt - we dont care about the rest of the world. this is OUR election. shut up!
Matt, thanks for proving to
Matt, thanks for proving to us all once again that being a liberal and a jackass doesn't require intelligence.

Obama Vs Palin
So, Sarah Palin qualifies for the role of VP because Alaska borders Russia?? This thinking is assinine at best. Let's, Califorinia and Texas border Mexico, let's get these governors on board!! I am certain their qualifications for VP are much higher than Palin!! McCain, on Sunday, stated "SHE (Palin) IS MY PARTNER AND MY SOULMATE"! This is a comment normally expressed by lovers and NOT presidential/vise presidential candidates!! McCain met this woman ONCE!! AND determined she qualified for VP? I think McCain actually fell in love with this gal and decided he wanted to be her, all else is secondary!! I cn just imagene how those men, such as Libermann, Pawlenty, and Ridge, feel about how McCain literally led them on to think they were being considered as his running mate. He backstabbed them big time!! What about the truely experienced Republican women who have been governors and senators for a more than a couple of years?? cCain has done them all an injustice!! The man is senile and delusional!!
Well...
What does it say about John Mccain's claim to use his 'personal experience' in making important decisions when he only met sarah palin ONCE before nominating her to be a heartbeat away from the presidency? (a 72 year old's heart at that)
He is incredibly reckless. She was fishing five years ago and got her first passport in 2007! On top of those outstanding qualifications, The woman supported PAT BUCHANAN over george bush in 2000. If that's not hard-right, i don't know what is. 48% of america may love her, but the world is scared of her already.
But dont get me wrong, i'm pleased he made such a bizarre choice. McSame hasnt got a chance now! Matt is right. Sorry folks!

Apparently you got your
Apparently you got your wish.
We already knew that
You dont care about the world eh?
In case you hadn't realised, you live in it.
This is why republicans are famous the world over for being MORONS!
What you'ld rather be
So you don't believe in God, eat meat killed by someone else, ignore the fact that the heartland used to be under glaciers, believe an egg is a blob of tissue before its scrambled and human preborns can be murdered because you don't want your son or daughter, and think if someone comes into your home or on your property to kill you should be welcomed with open arms, then you are a big, blowhard doofus.
You have suceeded.
Congratulations

Incoherence and simplicity at its best.

Damn right, let's keep that thought else we all die from fright over the beating Obama's going to take. Already Zogby, ZOGBY, a liberal pollster if ever there was one has McCain/Palin up by 2 points over Obama/Plagiarist (Had to drop out of the presidential race in 1988), bigot (7-11's all run by Indians), racist, (Obama's a nice clean articulate black man), sexist, (Sara Palin is attractive).
We'll be seeing all this and much, much more in upcoming campaign ads from McCain and the RNC. William Ayers, anarchist whose killed two policemen and said to all his followers "Kill your parents". Reverend Wright who mentored Obama for TWENTY YEARS and is on record as saying "GOD DAMN AMERICA" and of accusing the CIA for infecting blacks with aids. Obamason claims to have NEVER HEARD THIS IN RGE 20 YEARS HE ATTENDED SERVICES. Then we have Frank Marshall Davis, a registered COMMUNIST who mentored Hussein when he was a young man. Tony Rezko and the sweetheart real estate deal, the vote FOR ALLOWING babies born alive after abortion attempts to DIE, UNATTENDED, the infamous NO VOTE on the INFANTICIDE BILL.
Did you loony liberals think for one moment this all went away? LOL, the campaign has yet to begin, my liberal friends and a mountain is soon to come down on your pitiful empty suit of a candidate.
Rove? Is he still alive?
Rove? Is he still alive?
Susan Collins
As a conservative, why in the world should I be overly concerned about the re-election of Susan Collins? Aren't there enough RINOS in the Senate and House now? Had she, or Snowe, Hegel--and the list goes on--been replaced by a democrat earlier, would anyone have really noticed the difference!
Sarah Palin
You bet Rove is still alive. You can see him most nights on either O'Reilly or Hannity and Colmes. After listening carefully to Rove for a couple months now, I find him to be the smartest pundit out there bar none. Easy to see how he guided GW Bush to 2 wins. I wish he would take leave from Fox and go work for McCain/Palin.
Liberals unite....
It's time for all liberals to come together to fight the evil, racist, rabid Republicans. This way, one cluster bomb can take care of all of you fools.
Which political party was responsible for the abolishment of slavery?
Who was the first president to try to push a Civil Rights Act through Congress and what was his party?
Which political party was mainly responsible for the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act?
Which political party worships "the state" and wants to be nanny to us all?
Answers: Republican, Eisenhower/Republican, Republican, democRAT.
Any one who is a democRat is an ignoramus.
Sarah "Barracuda" Palin is
Sarah "Barracuda" Palin is gonna eat your lunch you little whimpy boys!
Four More Years!
Wonderful. You couldn't ask for a better script. The "abstinence only" sex education moron has a 17 year old daughter who is pregnant. The "ethics in government" airhead-governor fires law enforcement personnel because they don't support her politically, and be her own personal police force for problems in her own family. The "experience matters" candidate picks a genius-VP who is a former second place winner in a beauty contest, sportscaster, and governor of a state with fewer people than most small cities.
Good job, Republicans. You really are running on a platform of more of the same last eight years. Enjoy the election...I know liberals will!
Matt's "thoughts"
Matt, thank you for taking a time out to share your 'thoughts' with us, but there is a line forming and people would really like to get their burgers sooner rather than later.
Remember, your advancing above minimum wage is a function of your job performance.

Another Rev. Wright
Percy Sutton Say's about Obama
I was introduced to him by a friend who was raising money for him and the friends name was Dr. Khalid al Mansour from Texas. He is the principle adviser to one of the world’s richest men. He told me about Obama. He wrote to me about him and his introduction was ‘there is a young man that has applied to Harvard and I know that you have a few friends left there becasue you used to go up there to speak, would you please write a letter in support of him?’
Watch the videos here http://www.audacityofhypocrisy.com/2008/08/28...
In the second video at between 1/2 and 3/4 mark you will hear:
Dr Monsour says that white people feel nothing so you must cut off their nose, cut off their ears, cut out chunks of their flesh, don't worry god doesn't care he want's you to do it.
Looks like another roosters come home to roost for Mr Obama.
From a different perspective
So, Sarah Palin,Governor Of Alaska is not qualified to be VP? But Barack Obama as a community organizer is qualified to be president? He spent only 146 days as a US Senator, and took a trip overseas, this makes him qualified? Barack Hussein Obama wants to raise taxes and kill babies, John Sydney McCain wants to raise babies and kill taxes. The choice is clear.

The article states that Rove
The article states that Rove "told a story of Cindy McCain adopting a child with health problems from Mother Teresa's orphanage."
Wow, was this the same child that Rove smeared with rumors that she was McCain's love-child with a black mistress in the 2000
primaries?
John McCain nobably served his country, but his ambition has forced him to betray his principals by embracing Rove and Bush. I voted for McCain in the 2000 primaries, but will not vote for him now. He's not the same man.
Big mistake
Dear group,
Why God has driven me to this site, I'll never know, because I have never really done this, until today, when I happened upon this site earlier this morning.
Let me just say that there are many, many good women out there who do or have done many of the things that Palin has done. That is truly nice and commendable.
But, surely, this does not qualify any of them to be Vice-President. Come'on folks, there simply is no comparison to Biden.
The Vice-Presidency is literally, literally, a heartbeat away from becoming President. The serious question each and every one of us should be asking is, "Would you be voting for this person to be the President of the United State of America?"
And, just for the record, I DO put my country first, or else I wouldn't even be taking time to write to this opinion column. Apparently, John McCain did not put his country first, because he would have never chosen this person as Vice-President. Something is very wrong here. There are far too many good republican women candidates that he could have chosen, if he wanted the VP to be a woman. But, somehow in all the mix, he forgot that this person could end up being President, God forbid, if something should happen to him.
This, in my humble opinion, IS NOT, putting your country first. Anyone, who agrees with this statement,
Country First" should be sober enough to see that John McCain made a big mistake. Too bad, but it looks like something else is going on here.
I really do pray for all of us and especially this beautiful country of ours, that I love so much. God bless and guide the United States of America AND the voters this November!
And, by the way, name-calling is truly imbecile and immature. (Karl Rove, no exception.)
Well, that's my opinion.
Rove
Way to stay classy, Karl.
His boss George "The
His boss George "The Dumbest" Bush is the biggest doofus of all time in the whole wide world.
Big Mistake By Obama
classylady, taking your line "The Vice-Presidency is literally, literally, a heartbeat away from becoming President", take a look at Obamas' choice. Biden has had emergency surgery to get rid of aneurysms in his brain. A heartbeat from death indeed. Obamas' thought processes do not look so good.
Big doofus
Uhbama looks to take that title from Bush, the man is almost incoherent with a teleprompter. So many uhs, so little experience. Change, 30 years in the Senate Biden, keep the change, it is no change at all.

Not even a contest
Please find something other then name-calling. I've heard enough of that from my elementary grandchildren.
McCain is 72 years old. He could "go" at any time. Choosing this so ill-equipped person as Vice-President was simply NOT putting this country first. McCain goofed.
It's not even a debate. Obama has much more experience in comparison. Perhaps, you have not taken the time to look at all the legislative bills Obama proposed, co-sponsored, and actually saw realized during his tenure in the Senate, and many of them, God forbid, FOR the hard working people in this country and NOT the big corporations. I honestly can't understand what everyone's concern is with Obama. He's worked hard for many hard-working people in this country and all you can come up with is name-calling.
(I guess I should be more understanding. It must be because you haven't left the 4th grade yet). That's what they do in elementary school, you know, name-calling.
Sorry, just don't see what this GOP ticket has. What legislation has Palin proposed in her two-years of experience as Governor? Frankly, I can't even believe that people are actually considering this person.
Come'on, let me hear something other than name-calling.
Palin is a nice person, looks pretty, has done civic work, etc. But,I would certainly vote for Biden ANYTIME for President before Palin.
It's just not a contest.
First, Rove is correct.
First, Rove is correct. Biden is a doofus; just look at his recent comments about how Israel will have to accept a nuclear Iran under an Obama administration. I can't wait to see the spin on that one.
Second, Obama experienced and more so than McCain? Ha! Voting 'present' on bills is not experience. Neither is living aboard. The only one between the two of them that has actually gotten things done is McCain. Obama hasn't really accomplished anything - otherwise so many of his supporters at the convention would've actually been able to mention something rather than dodge the topic completely whenever asked to cite an example. His only noteworthy work was the whole "kill babies even if they survive abortions" thing and opposing the surge. (The former he's tried lying about, and the latter he's said he doesn't and wouldn't support despite knowing what he knows now.) Yeah, bravo. Obama can't possibly compare to McCain. Why else do you think Mr. "I'll debate McCain anytime, anywhere" was suddenly unavailable when McCain offered ten townhall meetings to debate in during the summer? Racist, unfair questions? No, it was because he would've been blown off the stage, as was the case at Saddleback. Those upcoming debates could very well be more of the same.
It's amazing really. So many Obama supporters kept saying their guy had judgment and didn't need experience. Experience apparently counts now that Palin is a VP nominee. What a surprise. And why do I get the feeling so many complaining about her would've complained if Romney or Pawlenty had been chosen instead? "How dare McCain not pick the woman?" One also wonders what the reaction would be if Palin actually beats Biden in their debate.
Obviously, Palin has put a major scare into the left. And why not? She may be inexperienced compared to McCain, yet by all accounts, she is light years ahead of Obama. Palin has actually accomplished stuff during her political career. Whether or not you support what she's done is one thing, but she actually has a resume. Obama talks big, but what has he delivered? Nothing. What has he done during his short US Senate career? Nothing, unless you choose to count proposing gutless retreat from Iraq an accomplishment. Of course, considering how things are going, that says very little for his judgment, doesn't it?
Feel free to keep bringing up the experience issue against Palin, though, Obama supporters. That just keeps drawing attention to his own lack of experience.
That brilliant commentator Karl Rove
Karl said
"[The current economic disaster] was brought on by risky behavior where government made a promise to private individuals who went out and made themselves very, very rich by risky practices that have put our economy at risk."
Yes, Karly, and isn't that just what Republican administrations love to do, assure rich businessmen that they can go out and make a killing without having to worry about any sort of federal oversight that just might prevent them from indulging in so much greedy corruption that they sometimes hurt even themselves -- but more often hurt numerous hard working honest people further down the financial line.
And tell us again, Karl, how Obama was probably going to choose Tim Kaine for Veep and thus reveal that he was only playing politics (rather than looking out for the good of the country) by choosing a little tested governor from a not so significant state, a man who was once mayor of a not so significant city...yes, tell us that one again, Karly.
REPUBLICANS-
If McCain dies and your daughter gets raped, guess what? Sarah Palin is gonna make sure your daughter gives birth to a rapists' child, unwanted and unloved. Thats what conservative compassion is and if thats not scary, i don't know what is.
John McCain, you've alienated the rest of the world already. You think you can solve global challenges on your own? George Bush did, and as a result, he quickly became the world's most famous retard.
Good luck to ya!
It really is sad
It really is sad that all of you contributing on this thread feel that it is more important knocking each other down than trying to actually communicate with one another.
Is there no common ground between the left and right?
Are we not all Americans?
Remember, no one was every convinced of anything by another person screaming in their faces.
This entire thread is sad.
I weep for our country.
why
Why do we care what Rove says -his and Coulter's ravings have less credability than those of a drunk in a bathroom stall lying in his (or her) own barf.
