DeChant: I supported Biden, not Hillary

DENVER -- When Maine's Democratic National Committeewoman Jennifer DeChant was elected earlier this year, speculation ran rampant on the blogs that she was a Hillary Clinton supporter. Tuesday at the Democratic National Convention, however, she told PolitickerME.com that the only primary contender she backed was Joe Biden, the party's eventual vice presidential nominee.

DeChant had served as committeewoman - and therefore a superdelegate - before being ousted for missing too many meetings.

She was replaced by Rita Moran, chairwoman of the Kennebec County Democrats. Earlier this year party leaders decided to reconsider their action when they found out DeChant missed the meetings because of a difficult pregnancy.

DeChant narrowly won her seat back.

Neither woman had publically come out in support of a candidate, but many perceived Moran to be an Obama supporter, and there were rumors on the blogs that DeChant had a Hillary sticker on her car. DeChant said the rumor was very widespread, and very widely believed.

With Obama and Clinton neck and neck during the primaries, every superdelegate counted.

Moran said she was always an Obama supporter but never told anyone.

DeChant said the only sticker she had on her car was in support of Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) for president, before he dropped out after Iowa.

"Never, I never said I supported (Hillary Clinton)," she said.

As for Biden, she said she's thrilled Obama chose him as vice president. "He is exactly what we need," she said.
