On the same night that Barack Obama accepts the Democratic nomination for President, U.S. Senate candidate Tom Allen (D-Portland) will share the stage with Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and three other top Senate challengers.
“We have a once-in-a-generation chance to bring meaningful and lasting change to our country by electing Barack Obama President and sending a stronger Democratic majority to the Senate,” said Schumer, the chairman of the Democratic National Senatorial Campaign Committee. “We need a stronger majority in the Senate to enact Obama’s broad, sweeping agenda, and our outstanding group of candidates is ready to deliver it.”
Allen, a current U.S. Representative, is challenging incumbent Sen. Susan Collins (R-Bangor).
The following Senate candidates, all Democratic challengers, will join Schumer and Allen: Jean Shaheen of New Hampshire, Tom Udall of New Mexico and Jeff Merkley of Oregon.
In a release from the Democratic National Committee, Allen said: “Next week’s Convention will be a tremendous opportunity to talk about how we can change the direction of Maine and our nation. I look forward to speaking to my fellow delegates about solving the energy crisis, bringing our troops home safely and responsibly from Iraq, providing universal health care, and expanding opportunities for the middle class.”

Funny
how Allen isn't afraid to show up to his own party's convention.
Actually
completely understandable. I'd be ashamed to show my face at the MCCain/Bush/Cheney love fest too!
The Republican party's platform says women (regardless of how young they are - even 14 year olds!)who were raped, victims of incest or may die if a pregnancy continues should be forced to have a child against their will. It also probably hits too close to home for Collins when it basically calls sexual orientation a perversion.
Rudy Giuliani as keynote speaker???
Well, that part does make sense in one way. Rudy and John McCain are both notorious serial adulterers so they have much in common.
A question for loyal GOPers
Since your party believes that it should be illegal for a 14 year old who has been raped and is likely to die if she goes through 9 months of pregnancy to have an abortion ...
how long should she be jailed for this offense?
Newsflash
Mr. Allen, people outside of Maine cant vote for you. You might be better off actually campaigning in Maine instead of Denver...also if you were to campaign in Maine you might help close the 20 point advantage Collins has in the polls. Just an idea.
Well, since Allen is
Well, since Allen is campaigning against the Senator for Washington, DC, it might make sense for him to spend time outside of Maine.
We all know Collins loves to highlight her 100% attendance record, that is because she is in DC 99% of the time. How can she represent us, when she is never home in Maine to hear out concerns.
Wednesday
I'm pretty sure Tom is speaking on Wednesday.
This looks like it could be
This looks like it could be one FUN convention. There's a great set of links for it on http://www.USAMediaGuide.com. It includes links to the official convention site, the host committee's site, the "protest" site, places to watch it live online and other convention-related sites.
Pingree
Is Pingree speaking at the conventions?
