Two First Congressional District candidates with very different views announced advertising campaigns today bearing the same central theme: the need for fresh faces in Washington.
“Times are tough right now, and career politicians don’t seem to be able to get anything done,” begins Democrat Adam Cote in his television advertisement.
“We live in challenging times, and career politicians seem less concerned about improving our way of life,” begins a radio advertisement for Republican candidate Dean Scontras.
Both Cote and Scontras are political newcomers. They describe themselves as family men with deep roots in the state. Cote touts his real world and military experience. Scontras touts his support for small businesses.
Cote's ad will appear on all broadcast and cable channels. Scontras' ad will air on talk radio, and maybe some music stations later on.
The rest of the advertisements, while staying with the central theme, demonstrate fundamental differences between the two messages, such as in their solutions to fixing the economy.
“As your Congressman, I’ll focus on improving the economy for Maine’s working families. I’ve specialized in clean energy. I can help reduce high energy costs and our dependence on foreign oil,” Cote said.
“I want to lower our taxes, reduce regulations on small businesses and cut wasteful spending to fix the economy and return more jobs to Maine,” Scontras said.
Scontras and Cote, who both have young children, left listeners with the notion that they are family men.
“I will plan to get us out of Iraq responsibly, honor our commitments to our veterans, and use our tax dollars to help Maine families. I’m Adam Cote and I approve of this message.”
“I’m Dean Scontras, Republican candidate for Congress, and I approve of this message because it’s time to elect a Congressman who will fight for Maine’s families.”
