The Portland area League of Young Voters announced their endorsements today.
They are:
U.S. Senate: Tom Allen, D-Portland
First Congressional District: Chellie Pingree, D-North Haven
State Senate District 8: Justin Alfond, D-Portland, the league’s founder
State House District 114: Peter Stuckey , D-Portland
H.D. 120: Diane Russell, D-Portland
"I'm thrilled and honored to have the endorsement of the League of Young Voters," Pingree said in a statement. "The League has become an impressive force in Maine politics and it's exciting to have the support of such an energetic and engaged organization. The League's goal of building a progressive governing majority is just what this country needs right now, and I'm honored to be able to work with them to achieve it.”
The league is a non-partisan organization. Communications Director Katie Diamond said they reached out to the two Republican candidates in CD1, the only contested race for Republicans in Portland, but neither responded to the League’s questionnaire.
This is the first time the league has endorsed in a primary. It is part of the group’s Project Vote. The final part of the project will be to release a voter guide, due out at the end of the week.
"It was a hard process with difficult decisions [at Project Vote], but the organization has really represented its members wishes and really respected a democratic voting procedure," says Jill Barkley, League Steering Committee member and volunteer. "I really enjoyed hearing what other Leaguers had to say about each candidate."

Wow. I'm absolutely stunned
Wow. I'm absolutely stunned at the endorsements!
Let's see how the LYVs feel after 10 or 20 years of feeding the entitlement machine their candidates continue to embrace and expand.
No wonder he's bitter
Pingree gets the endorsement of one of the most influential grassroots group in Southern Maine and Strimling is left with "best politican" in a weekly newspaper poll that his campaign probably stuffed.
No wonder he's so mad at Pingree. She keeps getting the good stuff and he's left with the table scraps.
This is a surprise?
The fact that Portland Area Young Voters, or whatever, would support a straight democrat ticket is no surprise, and hardly news - LOL! THey should at least be honest to their politics and call themselves the "Portland Area League of Young Democrats"...

Yeaahhh surrree...they're
Yeaahhh surrree...they're non-partisan... These endorsements are totally meaningless.
actually Aaron, they tried
actually Aaron, they tried to reach out to both Republicans in the CD1 race. They refused to answer questions, be interviewed, or fill out the questionnaire. I think a lot of people at the League's debate (which included the republican and democratic candidates) really liked some of the things Charlie Summers' wife Ruth had to say about his positions. They would have considered endorsing in the republican race, but couldn't because neither candidate would talk to them.
They also have endorsed Green party candidates in the past, so how could they identify by one group? They are young people, engaging other young people on issues that matter to us, and they don't follow party lines. Come join the fun Aaron!
what they left out...
Politicker Maine left out the fact that The League chose to only make endorsements in races that were considered 'contested'--where there had to be a primary face-off between more than one candidate. Hence, what appears to be a partisan ticket is actually false because the only competitive primary races in Portland are with the Democrats (with the exception of the Republican CD-1 race).
Primary endorsements don't reflect the endorsements The League will make in the fall when the competition will be more multi-partisan.
