Police remove Dobson from GOP convention

Laurie Dobson, an independent candidate for the U.S. Senate, was removed from the Maine GOP Convention by the Augusta Police Department earlier today.

Julie O’Brien, executive director of the party, said Dobson came into the convention to protest the war during Sen. Susan Collins’ speech. She wanted onto the floor – where non-delegates are not allowed to be.

After causing more commotion, sources said, she was asked to leave. When she wouldn’t leave, she was escorted out by police.

Dobson was at the convention last night drumming up support from the Ron Paul supporters, and spoke to Collins at a reception after.

Today, she said she had joined the Ron Paul supporters, holding signs outside of the convention floor, and not breaking any rules.

Ken Lindell, coordinator of the Paul delegates, said she was in no way part of the Paul group. “She’s an independent candidate,” Lindell said.

In a statement, Dobson said: "I was at the Convention by invitation of the Ron Paul delegates; I should not have been forced out of the Civic Center when I was causing absolutely no trouble. Susan should be ashamed for keeping such a lockdown on the Party. Instead of letting the Party run her conscience and her campaign, Susan should be learning what the people of Maine want.

Dobson said she went to the neighboring Ground Round restaurant to use the restroom. Collins was there giving a speech to a group of firefighters. She said she approached Collins there to tell her that the Republican Party was “boxing her in”.

Collins told her that she was not involved in the decision to remove her, Dobson said.

Sources said she was removed from that event as well.

I was at the Convention at the invitation of specific Ron Paul delegates, I didn't say I was a 'part' of their group. There were 75 delegates for Ron Paul there, according to one of these delegates. The event was youtube videod later by another Ron Paul group member.

I was NOT going into the convention to protest the war during Collin's speech. I was asked by yet another Ron Paul person to stand with them during their walk through the convention.

The statement by the Republican party official, that I 'planned to protest the war during Collins' speech' is a convenient fabrication and a false assumption. If I wished to be a disruption I could have easily done so during Mitt Romney's speech, when I was a seated member of the group-- and they were aware of my presence, since I had shaken Susan's hand earlier.

In fact, I met a great many very nice people at the Convention during the first evening and I have their cards and phone numbers, and many were well-wishers for my campaign. It was entirely peaceful, as was my clear intent.

I had three young campaigners with me the next day, and they were holding up two of my signs. This is the real reason, I believe, that I was removed. I never raised my voice and I was behaving according to any conventional and expected standards. One badged official told me later that he watched the event happen and my behavior could not have been a reason for my removal.

The kids were stunned when they were forcibly removed along with me, with people putting hands on them. They wrote a joint letter to express their feelings to the Biddeford Journal, as they were witnessed afterwards by an employee of that paper.

Ejecting excited kids from a convention is not a respectable behavior by the Republican Party. One of the kids told me later that he plans to become a journalist. He said that his teacher told him about things like this happening, but he was angry now that it happened to him.

It's also another instance of egg on Susan Collin's face, in the follow up to her trying to arrest 6 people in Bangor who were waiting to see her in the Federal Building last year. I am glad that she is starting to get the message that people want her to listen to the people in Maine. I told her that 80% of them want out of this war when I met her.

Susan said she 'had to do what she thought was right'. I said, 'what's right is what the people she represents want her to do'. I said that Margaret Chase Smith, whom we both admire, was willing to buck her Party when they wanted her to do the wrong thing by supporting McCarthyism.

I told Susan that she needs to follow the people's will, and not be in lockstep with her party, if it is taking her in a direction that the people of Maine do not want to go. She had no good answer for this, except to repeat herself.

Susan needs to think for herself and not just repeat a mindless phrase over and over. She needs to be truly responsive, in my view, when her decisions are challenged.

I asked her to search her soul; if she does that, and pays attention to what people are trying to tell her, maybe we will see some change in the direction of our country. In the meantime I am more determined than ever to follow my own conscience.

I believe Margaret Chase Smith would prefer this type of action in these days of so much anguish and fear. We must be true to ourselves and act independently, not like herd animals.

Disgusting

Although I did not witness Laurie's removal I was outside and joined her speaking with the Sargent @ Arms. He sympethized with with her but stood by the decision to keep Laurie out of the building. Laurie was even denied an escourted visit to the ladies room before leaving the grounds. I find the behavior of those in charge very disturbing. Is this the behavior we should allow from our elected servants? When will people wake up and see that we no longer have a government by and for the people? Do the people have to resort to violence to get justice in this country? It sure is looking this way. People should wake up and see the tree of power thats being God, People, Government. At what time did government get moved up the tree? This is the way they act and expect us to believe. Truely disturbing! At one point Laurie was even willing to make a stand and be arrested but with no media or witnesses on hand to see this disturbing behavior first hand it would of been pointless. I applaud Laurie's courage in confronting Susan and trying to restore this country to it's true roots.

Dear Laurie

You are crazy. The more you speak, the more you appear in public, the closer the guys with white suits and nets get.

It's sad to watch this, and I hope you eventually get the help you need from a caring professional, before you hurt someone, and get it from law enforcement.

Throw the Bums Out

You can criticize Laurie Dobson, Mark Finks and Edward Cohen till the cows come home, but if the usual suspects get re-elected, you have no one but yourself to blame.

If Ed Cohen does not have sufficient write-in votes at primary for GOP nomination to US Senator, you will have only Suzy to carry the Republican banner.

If Laurie Dobson does not file in time with the Secretary, you will have only the usual suspects from which to choose.

It is not too late to throw the bums out. You must either nominate Ed by writing in Cohen for GOP US Senate, or you must gather signatures on Laurie Dobson's nomination petitions.

You can do both without hurting either Ed or Laurie. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.

I have been pleading with the Ronulans to file for elected and party office forever. You cannot elect a candidate without a slate. Ron Paul is not the mesiah. He is one candidate in a field of Libertarians and Conservatives.

If you have not filed for primary nomination, you can still support Laurie, Ed and Don Christen's two marijuana initiatives. Circulators are needed now for Laurie, and on June 10 or sooner for Don.

If you were running for office, I would support you the same as I have supported Laurie, Don and countless others for about 45 years. Call now: operators are waiting.

Bottom line, she is not a republican and should not be at the republican convention. If she wanted to be their she should have become a republican. I saw some of what happened in the lobby and felt bad for the kids. She has no one to blame for getting thrown out but herself. What was she thinking bringing independent campaign signs into the republican Convention.

From a Ron Paul Supporter.

It was only too bad that the Augusta Police Department simply ejected her instead of being able to arrest her for trespassing and vandalism, since she re-arranged a Susan Collins sign arrangement outside. She should be in jail.

Maybe I'll get my town to file charges against her. If Kennebunkport has jurisdiction over Bush for war crimes, my town has jurisdiction over her for being disrespectful and ignorant.

trawling for trouble

The latest comment apparently comes from Ms. Julie O'Brien who had a shrieking freak out when one of the kids I was with tried to put one of my paper signs on an empty stick in front of the Civic Center. I (very audibly) reminded him that we are not supposed to touch anyone else's signs or property and I immediately removed it from the stick.
They were younger adolescents and didn't do any harm. After they were kicked out, it's a wonder they didn't show their frustration by yelling, but they were very well-behaved kids and decided to write a joint letter of protest, which has been submitted to the papers.
This woman is trawling for trouble. There was none being made, even though she did her best to try to make it and stick it on me. It shows how desperate the Maine Republican Party is to keep control of their party. It doesn't appear to be working, in my view. See my dobsonforsenate you tube page for the video. It's linked to the bangor six statement.

What did she expect from a party that re-elected the dub we have for a President now and who only campaigned for re-election in front of invited guests inside away from the public?

If Dobson is not a Republican, why would she be campaigning at a Republican(private) event, and expect to be welcome. I don't get it.

Dobson Came By Invitation

I came by invitation from Ron Paul supporters. This story will be in tomorrow's Biddeford Journal Tribune and the event was witnessed afterwards by the editor.

Yes, my materials were on the Ron Paul table, but the fact is, I offered my support as a US Senate Candidate, to stand with Ron Paul supporters in solidarity with them in their effort to get Ron Paul delegates to the National Convention and also to get their platform accepted.

I am an independent candidate and I share many views with Ron Paul, so it is not surprising that I would come to show support.

Maybe this is strange to some of you, but I don't believe it is. We are being controlled by the two parties who are bought by corporate money and I value the independent voices in both camps and also those running independently. We need to come together for the people, not the corporate parties.

welll, if Nader and Kucinich and Ron Paul would get their heads on straight they would see that its time to lead the people to organize together for rights as citizens in the face of an enemy of the congress, executive and judicial representation of corporate rule.

I thank Laurie for picking up on the theme- she has balls that most do not, but that we need !
take it easy dear ,

For the moment, let's forget about the personal lives of those being scrutinized just for the sake of argument. That said, here's what I don't get... On the one hand you've got a handful of democrats, none of which any conservative believes has the testicular fortitude necessary for the inevitable rough days ahead; each of which has their own version of retreat into defea
