Bangor protesters acquitted

Six anti-war protesters arrested at Susan Collins’ Bangor office last year were acquitted of criminal trespassing charges in Penobscot County Superior court Wednesday, the Bangor Daily News is reporting.

On Tuesday, U.S. Senate candidates Tom Ledue, a Democrat, and Laurie Dobson, an independent, spoke at a rally in support of those arrested.

The defendants were arrested March 8, 2007 while protesting the surge in Iraq. They wanted Collins to vote against war funding.

BDN reporter Judy Harrison wrote:

Penobscot County District Attorney R. Christopher Almy said that the verdict reflected a change in Mainers attitude toward the continued conflict in Iraq.

Dear Politicker Maine,
Just a note to thank you for your coverage of this news in Bangor, including our rally on behalf of the Bangor Six.

Thanks also for mentioning a newsworthy event even when the details of the story do not prove to be flattering information about a top contender in the Senate race, Susan Collins.

Another anemic contender in the race, Tom Allen, has also arrested people protesting the war. These are the two current top contenders, both of whom arrest people trying to exercise their right to peacefully redress grievances; yet the jury unanimously sided against the arresting of these protesters, and not with the Collins/Allen brand of politics.

The fact that you covered this goes to show that money isn't everything and not all news is blacked out. There is a place to come for those who want to hear what is going on in political news, no matter who is making it--PolitickerME!

For those who want more detail, go to the coverage at www.paxchristimaine.org and also www.dobsonforsenate.com.

Many thanks,

And now the jury members

And now the jury members ought to be indicted, tried and convicted of mis-using the judicial system to make a political statement.

What ended the Vietnam War

...Which is what finally worked to end the Vietnam War, when courts started to side against the arrest of protesters, who were properly seen as civil resisters and not disobedient/violators. When politics hit every facet of the populace, hit 300 campuses with strikes and riots, hit everyone in the face with the true costs of the war, something from which we are deliberately hidden--that's when the warmongers had to back off and retrench.

The evidence allowed in this case included the age, intelligence and experience of the defendants. Good thing. They knew their Constitutional rights and they defended them, admirably. You should consider yourself lucky sir, to have these people as your neighbors in Maine.

A tri-corner hats off to the Bangor Six and all the other defenders of our proud state!
