Democrats appeal Senate candidate's ballot status

AUGUSTA—The Maine Democratic Party filed a Superior Court appeal Monday, taking issue with Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap and challenging the validity of independent Herbert Hoffman's petitions to be on the November ballot for U.S. Senate, a party spokeswoman said. (Boston Globe, AP)

Health care group honors Sen. Collins

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins has been named Legislator of the Year by the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare, a Washington, D.C., lobbying and advocacy organization. The organization gave out six Legislator of the Year awards at a reception during its annual "Capitol Hill Day" in June. (Bangor Daily News, Staff)

Prisoner voting activist holds two hostage

Town Shut Down

The town of Phillips is basically shutting down, having to lay off all of its municipal employees.

Saturday voters rejected a budget which would have raised the tax levy by around $250.

Because the new fiscal year begins tomorrow and no budget has been approved, the town manager has had to begin laying off roughly 20 part and full time employees, including himself. (WGME)
