Pig Book: Maine ranks 41st in pork barrel spending

$29,521,553: That’s total value of the 54 pork barrel projects secured from the federal government by Maine’s Congressional delegation, according to the 2008 Pig Book.

It's a small number compared to the $17.2 billion national total that Citizens Against Government Waste found in FY 2008’s 12 appropriation bills.

Maine ranks 41st out of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, with $22.41 of pork per capita.

You can search the Pig Book database here, but below are some highlights from Maine’s elected officials in Washington.

  • Smallest project: $16,000 for the “Surveillance of Northern Boundary Waters (Corps of Engineers: Operation and Maintenance)”
  • Largest project: $9,700,000 for the “Consolidated emergency control center, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (Navy)
  • Sen. Susan Collins sponsored bills worth $81.3 million
  • Sen. Olympia Snowe sponsored bills worth $70.0 million
  • Collins and Snowe win the "Taxpayers Get Steamed Award," along with Rep. Thomas Allen, because of $188,000 for the Lobster Institute.
