Hughes files report, faces fine

Former Republican House candidate David Hughes of Lewiston, who briefly came under fire by the Ethics Commission for not filing his Maine Clean Elections Act report, turned his paperwork in Thursday.

Following today’s commission meeting, board members are no longer concerned that Hughes misused the public funds, but did authorize staff to complete a full audit of his campaign.

Hughes gave his report to Executive Director Jonathan Wayne Thursday, along with bank statements and supporting documents. Without the report, the commission had no way of knowing how Hughes spent the $4,287 in public funds.

Hughes was 37 days late with his report, and was reminded of it eight times through various communications. The last letter informed him that the commission would be investigating his campaign.

Hughes told Wayne that he was dealing with a personal situation, which was the reason for the lateness.

The commission has given Hughes a $1,500 fine, mandated by MCEA laws. Wayne said the board recognizes this is a sizable fee, and Hughes will have the opportunity to contest it.
