CQ tackles Collins-Allen race in profile

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins: Getty Images PhotoU.S. Sen. Susan Collins: Getty Images PhotoCongressional Quarterly ran a story Tuesday on the U.S. Senate race between Democrat Tom Allen and Republican incumbent Susan Collins.

The article attempted to measure Collins' vulnerability in a race that she has led from the onset. A recent Rasmussen poll suggested Allen was closing the gap on the state's junior senator, but Collins' campaign told CQ they're comfortably ahead, both in the polls and in fundraising.

Allen and his supporters say their strategy of tying Collins to the unpopular policies of the Bush administration is working, and that a victory by presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama could help carry Allen into the Senate as well.

Susan is better than Tom

Susan Collins has shown that she is far better than Tom Allen at getting things done in Washington.

The last thing Maine needs is a left leaning socialist tax-and-spend guy like Tom Allen to become our U.S. Senator.

Smooth sailing, Senator Collins! You have my support.

The reason Tom Allen won't

The reason Tom Allen won't win in November is because he is out of touch with Mainers. For example, he is the co-sponsor of the card-check legislation that takes away workers right to a private ballot when deciding to unionize. This allows the union bosses to look over the shoulder of every worker to see how he or she votes! That is insane!!

Out of touch?

The only person out of touch with Mainers is Susan Collins, who supported every aspect of the Iraq War until the day Tom Allen announced his challenge. Then suddenly she decided a timetable for withdrawal wasn't such a bad idea.

If Susan Collins is really so upstanding, why doesn't she honor her two-term pledge?

Maine deserves better. And Maine political discussions deserve better than unsupported epithets like "socialist," Juan. I know the Collins campaign is facing some ugly poll numbers, but let's try to do better than name-calling.

seriously

I can't wait [not] to have a union thug at my shoulder every time I vote. I would much rather Allen amended his H.R. 800 to read that he will personally be at my shoulder every time. Now that might be worth it!
