Peter Cianchette, National Committeeman for the Maine Republican Party and former candidate for governor, has been nominated as the U.S. ambassador to Costa Rica by President Bush.
Cianchette serves as a partner at CHK Capital Partners, a strategic planning firm.
Cianchette said Wednesday that he can't comment on the pending nomination until it has gone through the U.S. Senate.
Trey Bohn, a White House spokesman, said there is broad bipartisan support for Cianchette's nomination.
He said he is not sure of Cianchette's background in Latin American issues. It was Cianchette's extensive experience in the public and private sectors that made him an appealing candidate, Bohn said.
Both U.S. Senators issued statements on the appointment today.
Sen. Olympia Snowe: “I have known Peter for a very long time and can attest to his dedication and commitment to public service. He is an excellent communicator and is, I believe, an ideal candidate for this opening. I’m extremely happy for Peter and his family and hopeful the Senate will move quickly to confirm his nomination.”
Sen. Susan Collins: “Peter is a terrific choice for this position. He is a dedicated, hard-working and well-liked individual whose blend of business, public service and civic service experiences will lend itself to this position. He will represent our nation well. I am hopeful that his nomination is approved by the Senate as quickly as possible.”
