Petitioners for a casino in Oxford County delivered more than 76,000 signatures to the Secretary of State’s office Monday, meeting their deadline.
Seth Carey, a Rumford lawyer, spearheaded the petition drive. He has proposed a full casino, which he said will bring money to the state.
Providing the Secretary of State’s office is able to verify at least 55,087 of them, the initiative will move to the Legislature. Other citizen’s initiatives are due Jan. 28.
Even if the Legislature approves Carey’s proposal, it could face the same fate the Washington County racino proposal suffered last year.
“(Gov. John Baldacci) does not support expansion of gambling,” said David Farmer, a spokesman for the governor. “If the Legislature were to pass it, he would not support it, which would be a veto.”
And if the bill doesn’t pass in the Legislature, or gets struck by Baldacci’s veto pen, it goes to the voters in November.
