All in the Family, Maine Style

While America grows tired of the Bush and (maybe) Clinton dynasties running the country, Mainers too are feeling their own form of dynasty fatigue...or maybe not.

Consider the following:

* While former State Senator Chellie Pingree is working her Washington DC network to pummel Ethan Strimling and maintain the frontrunner status in the Democratic nomination for the first US Congressional district, her daughter, Hannah Pingree, is anxiously awaiting the next legislative session, when the blonde bombshell will more than likely become the next Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives.

* Long time Maine politico Libby Mitchell, of Vassalboro, has worked the State's political landscape to ensure Democrats hold their majority in the State Senate, while strongly staking her claim to the Senate Presidency. At the same time, she is propping up her own daughter, a resident of  Portland, to run for that very same chamber. (For Sen. Strimling's seat, no less!) There's nothing wrong with a little nepotism to ensure a vote for leadership, is there? Her son, Charlie Mitchell, did a brief stint in the House, perhaps he can join them as well.

* Senate Republican Whip Richard Rosen has spent this past session trying to keep the 17 Republican Senators united (no small task with Deb Plowman and Kevin Raye as members of the same caucus), while his wife, Rep. Kim Rosen, holds power broker status on the Transportation Committee. A true Bucksport celebrity couple, huh?

* The Rosen's counterparts in the first congressional district, Acton's own Senator Richard Nass and his wife, Joan Nass, are York County's Legislative version of Bonnie and Clyde.

* Peter Mills and Janet Mills deserve a special award - not only are they a brother and sister team, their other sister Dora Mills is the head Doc at the Bureau of Health.  But wait - there's more - the Mills's clan were represented several decades earlier by their father!

 * Senator Bruce Bryant and his brother, Representative Mark Bryant serve together from western Maine - and in one of the more bizarre stories of the year - we learn that Senator Paula Benoit from Sagadahoc County is the aunt of the Bryant brothers.  This was discovered shortly after Sen. Benoit helped pass a Law that made adoption records more accessible.

* Dana Dow, Lisa Marrache and Josh Tardy all had fathers who served in the Legislature. As for John Martin, he's been under the State House dome long enough to comprise his very own dynasty.

I know Maine is a small State, but isn't this getting a little ridiculous?

Brilliant analysis

Except you said this: "Mainers too are feeling their own form of dynasty fatigue..."

I didn't see one example of a Mainer who was tired of any of those folks.

Maybe you forgot your concluding paragraph?

No Dynasty Here

Nothing against the folks mentioned here, but Mark Lawrence does not come from any dynasty. He's the fourth son of a shipyard family in Kittery. He knows who he is and where he comes from, and will be quite the fighter down in Washington should he be elected.

Elzabeth Mitchell

Not sure one can trust the information spilled out by Wally when he gets very important fact wrong such as that Elzabeth Mitchell is a resident of Portland and running for Ethan Strimling's Senate seat, not Lynn Bromley's seat in South Portland.

Wally appreciates and in fact, needs to be corrected at all times!  Thta's the beauty of the Internet.  So--have at me - any time.  When you are right (and you were!) We will make the corrections right away.

I hope adding the word "south" in front of Portland won't completely turn you off!

Anyway thanks to you--and several others for the additions and corrections.

A little offended

Blonde bombshell? What's next, a pat on the *ss next time you see her at the statehouse? I noticed that you didn't say Kevin Raye is a "hunk."

Who is writing this stuff?

I agree with the above comment regarding Rep. Pingree who is respected on both sides of the aisle more for her brains, her ability to negotiate than for her good looks. In government, what you get done counts more.

Second, who is writing this stuff? It's obvious there is either no Wally Edge or he's one busy boy editing 4 state blogs (with more to come).

So far, it seems more like a gossip column than insightful and the fact checking is limited. (Merrill, by the way, ran as an Independent not a Green)

Please--you people take your selves way too seriously. I thought it was amusing and kind of interesting.

Blonde Bombshell

Why is it that pundits focus on a woman's blond hair and a man's policy idea?

Hannah Pingree has not moved up the ranks on her blond hair, but on her intellect, savvy and genuine commitment to Maine people. She has also done a lot for women interested in getting involved in politics.

While I am sure this joke wasn't meant to offend, it does illustrate the nuances of language that still prevent women from truly being taken seriously as professionals.

family

Many sociologists and anthropologists believe the primary function of the family is to reproduce society, either biologically, socially, or both.
